Tamales for Heroes is a heartfelt initiative dedicated to supporting the brave men and women battling the devastating California fires. This grassroots effort provides freshly made tamales to firefighters and first responders as a gesture of gratitude for their tireless work and sacrifice.
Tamales for Heroes: A Helping Hand for California Firefighters
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Flores family, owners of Si Charro! Restaurants and Flores Concepts, started a community food program called Tamales for Heroes. It began with them donating over $10,000 worth of tamales and launching www.tamalesforheroes.com to help raise funds. Through their USDA-certified Carlotta’s Kitchen, they delivered thousands of handmade heat-and-serve tamales to Tucson’s first responders and healthcare workers.
Now, with the devastating fires tearing through Los Angeles and surrounding areas, the Flores family—who have roots in Southern California—are stepping up again. They’ve relaunched Tamales for Heroes and are donating over 3,600 tamales to those in need in LA. Partnering with Shamrock Foods of Arizona, they’ll distribute these tamales to community organizations like Hope The Mission.
Just like during Covid, they’ve reopened the website to let others join in and help fund more tamale deliveries. Shamrock Foods has generously committed to transporting the tamales in refrigerated trucks, ensuring they reach those who need them most.
Ray Flores, CEO of Flores Concepts/Si Charro! Restaurants, shared, “Our neighbors in Southern California, especially those in the service industry who have lost jobs and homes, need help right now. Tamales for Heroes is our way of sending support and a taste of Tucson—a quick, nutritious, and comforting meal. We’re grateful to Shamrock Foods for making this possible, as delivering refrigerated food to the region isn’t easy.”
