Meet “Chopper Ray,” The DRIVE Tucson’s Ambassador

As a pilot, Ray Caryl managed to fly quite an array of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft in some remarkably interesting and challenging places and situations. He served in the Army and the National Guard, and did a tour in Vietnam. He flew for US Customs drug interdiction and the US Forest Service on forest fires in both airplanes and helicopters in a career that spanned 38 years.

Many Tucsonans, including us, remember him as “Chopper Ray,” the helicopter pilot/reporter for Channel 13’s Chopper 13. We chose him as our ambassador because driving the official Drive car — our 1965 Karmann Ghia — takes some skills!

Chopper Ray is a Drive fan, too: “I listen to The Drive because they play all of the music I want to listen to — not just because my daughter is Bailey of the Bobby & Bailey Show.”

Ray Caryl is author of Catkiller 3-2: An Army Pilot Flying for the Marines in the Vietnam War.
